Futon Mattresses come in a lot of varieties these days

These days you have a lot of options when choosing a futon mattress. Originally, futon mattresses were filled with cotton batting, usually in a six inch thickness. Now, your futon mattress can be constructed of all cotton, cotton and polyester, 100% polyester, cotton and polystyrene foam, cotton and wool, wool and latex, 100% wool, and other varying combinations of the above materials. You can even get a futon mattress using innerspring construction. Also, many different thicknesses are available, ranging up to 10 inches.

All these different futon mattress configurations have different advantages and disadvantages. We'll try and enumerate a few below.

Cotton is relatively heavy, with the firmess level starting out softer but becoming more firm as the cotton compresses. In the six inch versions, the cotton futon mattress is easy to fold, but folding becomes more difficult as the thickness increases.

Wool is a high quality material. While it will raise the cost of the futon mattress, it also lowers the weight markedly. Wool provides great support and is naturally fire retardant, so it does not have to be treated with chemicals to pass goverment safety standards. Because the rigidity of a 100% wool futon mattress is so high, wool is better used in combination with other materials, unless the futon mattress will be used as a permanent bed and not folded.

Foam is not used by itself in futon matresses, but in combination with other materials, usually cotton. This combination produces a futon mattress with excellent rigidty and still acceptable flexibility, making it the most popular choice for bi-fold futon frames. Of course, the characteristics of this type of futon mattress will vary depending on the type, amount and placement of the foam.

The most common sizes of futon mattresses are as follows:
Twin Size 39" X 75"
Full Size 54" X 75"
Queen Size 60" X 80"
Chair 28" X 54"
Chair 30" X 54"
Twin Chair
39" X 54"
Love Seat
54" X 54"
California King
72" X 84"
Eastern King
78" X 80"
Note that sizes larger than Full size may be better suited to use as permanent beds rather than folding convertibles, due to the fact that the back of the futon will extend higher than a normal couch when folded. Of course, there are people that prefer this type of look. Just take it into consideration when planning your purchase of the futon mattress and frame.
